The system of claim 18 wherein the central station further comprises a plurality of host modem loopback impedances, each host modem loopback impedance connectable to a respective computer port; and wherein the central selector means has a pass-through mode position connecting the respective line port to the respective computer port and a loopback mode position connecting the respective host modem loopback impedance to the respective computer port, the central selector means being responsive to switch control signals to switch from a pass-through mode to a loopback mode and defaulting to the pass-through mode in the absence of switch control signals, such that in the pass-through mode, data signals can pass between the respective line port and the respective computer port.
